Fulica americana 168. Jan 14 Lake Temescal, 420 ft., Alameda Co., Calif. layer, probably never in contact with nesting birds. Both samples from nest marked "A" on page 161- being at position P16.3. 2 pairs on territory, one pair in the NE corner of the lake, by the dam, the other along B from 23 to 29. At the moment few other roosts seem to be evident on the lake. - Later - most are at the SE end, there being 15 these birds w/13E, w/3E, 2 G/R were seen. Sample #3 taken from top of nest which was apparently not heavily used as a brood nest, hence with not much fecal waste on it - nest at T6.3 - position "B" on page 161. Notes two birds showing interest in the area SE of the rocks -, but still not enough water there for real territory rights - as bird was seen cackling at P19-facing N, but no other bird was closer than @24, where a pair were feeding- this cackling bird could have been one of the pair earlier seen around the Rock. Rato, a pair was at NW end of lake, behind the floats, coming out of there, a male call was heard. Apparently 3 of the 7 known sex birds have been definitely lost - hope the other four hang on. - Univ. Calif.
