Dec 16 Lake Tamescal, 420 ft., Alameda Co., Calif. - Two tagged birds are apparently still in the N end of the lake. Three pairs are showing territoriality. 1 area includes the area of the swimming stuff, another extends along the E side to the E inlet, and the 3rd possible territory covers mud flat edge opposite one cat-tail area. (see next page). Later 3:45 p.m. - the 18 birds, led by a tagged bird, moved from I 15 to D 31 - there 2 saw them and moved in from D 36, with a territory defending bird close behind, and soon 2 came over from K 35 to join the flock. Again, no social reaction displayed by any birds during the joining. Now 3:50, flock moving directly across the lake. - Earlier about 3:20 pm. when a Double crested Cormorant came in over the S end of the lake, the flock that was out feeding on the mud at N 14 took fright and fled hurriedly to the water edge. Apparently the unfamiliar form of the cormorant scared them. Dec 17 Jewel Lake, 510 ft., Contra Costa Co., Calif. - Only one tagged bird among the 10-12 coots on the lake. This bird was first seen at N 26 - from where it was chased by B, the bird with the pin only. As it moved S it encountered the antagonism of another bird (p. 162) and was quite vigorously pursued to about E 14 - then a smaller bird (?) joined the pursuing bird and there
