Fulica americana 152 Dec 9 Lake Merritt o.l., Oakland Alameda Co., Calif.- park in San Francisco about 9 p.m. tonight. YG is a quite young bird, still having some grayish flecks on its head and neck. Dec 10 Elmir Calif. Campus, Alameda Co., Calif. - YG clipped to be kept to see if gray neck feathers are lost with development of adult plumage. BL/W tried to sex but failed. It had a layers of fat under the skin that interfered with work a great deal, and then seemed to have gotten into the air sac, and may have punctured the kidney while trying to punch thru the air sac - at least there seemed to be an extreme amount of bleeding. Sewed the bird up, ribs & skin, and released without having sex'd it. YG - sexed a male, no fat, good sized testis. Made a small skin incision, made one cut between ribs, had too much bleeding so I moved back to the next posterior area, and made of very small incision to do the job. Didn't put any rib stitches, but did put 3 in the skin. G sex'd it; some fat, but not much trouble. Only had to take 2 stitches in the skin, none between the ribs. Had a very large, 10+ mm testis. I'm certain it was not an ovary. This I originally thought this was a testis, after doing BL/W I decided both had ovaries E AGE 154
