But they shy away from the center that is growing in the courtyard, not eating it apparently, until they become desperate for green food. Dec9 same locality - 1/69 wt 4 13 gms. has the mid pad of each foot badly swollen, feet generally in bad shape. legs yellows tho. Xw wt 4 92 gms, legs and feet in good shape, tag replaced with [illegible]. Both of these birds go to Lake Temescal. Put there about 12:30 p.m. Lake Merritt Oakland Alameda Co., Calif.- S/6 + S/5/R seen close together feeding on lawn with many other coots + Mallardes near the NE end of [illegible] the refuge area. [illegible] and S/2 were in the fenced enclosure - S/2 in fact was trapped. Both S/6 + S/2 have lost a tag on one side. A little while later, about 3 hours, S/2 was seen feeding on the lawn near the NE end of the lake, out of the refuge area. 7 Coots were taken in the trapping today. I might be an adult but I rather think it is an early season immature. The bill appears to be a little adult like, but the legs are still green.
