Julius 949 Fulica americana 150 Dec 3 Univ. Calif. Campus, Alameda Co., Calif. from spending so much time out of the water. A number of them have abnormal formations on their feet. Dec 5 same locality. - Two birds, VS ♀ or ♂ died yesterday. VS ♂ perhaps as a result of surgical shocks. Autopsy revealed that no hemorrhage had occurred, that healing was progressing okay, but that the bird was very thin. Wing, leg, ovary, cloaca & syrinx saved. Still quite a bit of fat around the heart but lacking elsewhere. Ovary with several large follicles. ♂ - ♂, 6 mm testes, saved, had a very large gall bladder - 22 mm long by about 9 mm in diameter - adjoining tissues all stained by bile pigments. Liver, mesentery, intestine, even the wall of the coelomic cavity. Bladders and adjoining liver & gut saved in Bouin's fluid for latter examination. Also found a fluke on the pyzzard, fixed it. Saved cloaca, syrinx & testes, also leg & wing. - Lte. - fluke destroyed accidentally. Dec 7 - same locality. ♂♀ died today of malaria. Autopsy revealed an enlarged gall bladder with pigment staining surrounding tissues, a liver with several light lesions on it, and a dark mottled spleen. No evidence of hemorrhage in kidneys or other tissues. Ovary with one moderately sized follicle but most of them were undeveloped. Wing, leg, cloaca, syrinx & ovary saved.
