Dec 3 Lake Tonesal, 420 ft., Alameda Co., Calif.- Observing birds from 12 m to 1:15 p.m. saw 19 coots but did not detect any Tagged birds. Slight evidence of territory behaviour on the part of the birds along shore N of the East side inlet. (see journal p. 203). - Univ. Calif. Campus, Alameda Co., Calif.- VAR - weighs 388 qms. Was sersed, a ♀ and sewn up. The rib stitch was lost after a skin stitch was in, and it was left out. 3 skin stitches sealed the body well enough tho. This bird is in poor shape - just not feeding properly. - XW - weighs 520 qms. - proved to be a ♀. Had a little trouble with this bird, apparently got 1 rib too far forward, with the result that I believe the air sac was punctured. The incision actually was quite small. This bird had a fairly heavy layer of fat on it, so is in good shape, was a nasty tempered bird, and had a bad bleeding spell. 1 stitch held the 2 ribs okay, and 3 more stitches seemed to put the skin in good shape. - BT - weighs 431 qms, sersed ♀, very active, had little trouble working on the bird, only had a very small opening, took 1 stitch in ribs, 2 stitches rig a skin - old tag replaced with VAR. This bird has one bad foot, swollen. These birds seem to be generally suffering
