Fulica americana 147 Nov 26 Univ Calif Campus, Alameda Co., Calif. BF - of a F. wing, leg, syrinx, cloaca & ovary saved. Found another point of surgical technique in sex determination. To prevent cutting into thoracic air sac, cut between 1st & second true rib, and don't go ventral of the conspicuous nerve running along there. It is safe to go dorsal however to at least the level of the second uncinate process (2) and still avoiding the kidney. Incisions between the 2d & 3rd true ribs should not be made. - Also made a blood smear from the heart of this bird. Nov 28 Lake Merritt, Oakland, Alameda Co., Calif.
