MEASURE Of 19 coots taken on Lake Merritt today 4 immature birds were released on Lake Temescal at 8:25 p.m. They were tagged NS A, S/3, NS S and X's, all released at N end of lake. At 8:45 pm. I released four more birds on the south end of Aquatic Park along the wayside in Berkeley. These were all red series - /S/B, S/R, RS X's. Nov 19 same locality - 1 new bird X/B, the heaviest bird I have handled, died in the pool last night or early this morning. Dissecting it I found it to be a male, and covered with a terrific load of fat. There was an average of 1/2 inch of fat under the skin over most of its body, and the intestines were tied up by a mass of fat. The testes are 7 mm long, and were first found by going in thru the side of the bird. The wing, and area, a syrinx are preserved. Also the right leg was saved.
