Eulica americana Apr 26 Lake Jewel, Tilden Park, Contra Costa Co., Cal. came into the battle, giving a hollow nasal "poonk- poonk" and while remaining hidden causing a great (now 8 min after leaving the nest) I hear the "whew-whew, whew whew" of the downy young) commotion in the water, and then leading me around the inside of the island towards the boat, still staying hidden but frequently giving the "poonk" note. A moment later it was on the open water near the boat, and once raised itself above the water surface, and splashed water by feet reaching forward. This bird with the "poonk" note I take to be the female. While I was photographing the young it was answering the call of the parents with a low "whew"; whew". - The pair at the south end of the lake were busily packing nesting materials back and forth between pts 6 & 7 most of the afternoon yesterday, and one of them was packing stuff (dead cat-tails) into the cat-tails 8 of 7. During the foggy period this morning. - I returned to the nest site at 4 p.m. Heard a series of low "put-put, put, put, put-put"s coming from the cat-tails a few feet away from the nests. This I approached as silently as I could the pushing bird spied me nearly ten feet from the nest & came forward to intercept any approach. I moved under the cover of gusts of wind.
