Nov 5 Lake Temescal, 420 ft., Oakland, Alameda Co., Calif.
watching the several birds on the
lake today I was impressed by several
things. First, pursuit takes place
above and below the water, disputes
of some nature are frequent, I believe
they still involve territory tho the
limits have changed some due to the
lower water level. Also noted today
that while the coots were feeding on
pondweed, that a baldpate was in
close attendance, picking up tidbits
the coots dropped. I didn't see any
Baldpates trying to rob the coots
and only once did I see a coot
make a pass at a nearby Baldgate.
Nov 5- Univ. Calif. Campus Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif.-
1/6 at 5:25 p.m., just at dusk, was
giving a growl note comparable with the
growl heard by the supposedly, ♀ bird
at Jewel Lake while guarding her young.
This bird was pursuing and occasionally
being pursued by other birds into
water. For about 1/2 minutes while
I watched, most of the birds were
in the water, bathing and swimming
around. Two or three of them were
also seen to be diving and I seemed
to be swimming under water some.
They were generally more active
than I have seen them any other
time.
