Fulica americana 133 8/29 Jewel Lake, 5/0 ft., Tilden Park, Contra Costa Co., Calif. 4 birds on the lake today. They seemed to be feeding in close company part of the time, but most of the time the two adults fed together while the 2 immatures fed together someplace else. They seem to be sticking pretty much at the N end of the lake. Once when a red-tailed hawk approached the area in the course of making wide foraging circles, the three birds visible all worked over to the S side of the cat tails. Not hurriedly, but just rapidly enough that they were concealed by the time the hawk was overhead. No sign was observed as a warning. 8/31 Lewis, Calif. Campus, Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif. Bird-12 handled today had adult type bill but eye has some greenish flecho around perimter. P has an eye that I would call adult, no greenish rim to pupil or iris, 95 has an immature eye, with green borders - the both are quite alike in other characters, 8 has an eye that is adult in characters. 45 and 1 both were authorized to handle. 75 has immature eye pattern a was authorized to handle. Of the 16 birds handled today, at least 7 of them seemed to have adult eyes, that is eyes with solid red iris, absolutely no fleching. Only one of the birds seemed to have really yellow legs, and that bird I didn't record. One other has what falls very close to an adult eye, tho not fully
