Fulica americana 131 Jewel Lake, 510 ft., Tilden Park, Contra Costa Co., Calif. 2 birds on the lake this afternoon. They have been feeding most of the time about D12-14. One is B (now with solid silver-top) and the other is a young bird with a gray mottled bill, quite light at its base, very dark head, much like an adult, but with a grayish body and wings quite a bit lighter than the adult color. 7. Lake Temescal 420 ft., Alameda Co., Calif. About 20 coots on the lake today, pretty well scattered all over the area. About noon 4 of them were at the N end of the lake, and others scattered randomly. Chasing is still going on some, but it appears that for the most part, the young birds have been pretty well cleared out of the several territories, and since food is still abundant in non-territorial waters, they are feeding actively in the open waters of the lake. The NE & SE areas are both still being actively defended, and maybe the SW area also. The SE pair are still engaging in quite a bit of courtship activities, at least once I saw one bird mount the other, but the bottom bird sorta rolled under the water, leaving the other (?) just sitting there. Once a couple of birds in the NE were participating in what might be courtship play. - The new structure, whatever it maybe, in the SE area is somewhat more developed today. Much of the top material is composed of green cat tail leaves (of the narrow-leaved form).
