Feb 19 Fulica Americana -123- + 16 Jewel Lake 500 ft., Tilden Park, Contra Costa Co., Calif. - minutes after the hawk passed it continued to point its tail skyward, tho it was feeding and swimming around with its head up. After about 10 minutes or so a bleached headed bird came out of the cat-tails and fed at D13. A few minutes later I heard the “quack” of the ♀ and a moment later B (now bleached to S) with 2 tags came out of the cat-tails at E 26. She ducked back in as soon as she saw me, and a short time later I heard a bird spattering from D25 along the cat-tails to B19 or 20. The mallards worked out of the F-27 area shortly afterwards, and when I moved back down the road, I saw two UPM immatures at B18. Both looked to be in about the same plumage stage—the dark gray headed, mottled gray billed stage. + 23 Lake Teneocal, Elev 420 ft., Oakland, Alameda Co., Calif. - Arrived at 2 p.m. - Immediately upon arrival saw an adult in the S pair area chase an immature out of the cat-tails on the E side of the rock, through the channel S of the rock. I suspect this was a bird of the S pair, since the parent was not hotly pressed. - A short time later, an adult from the SW area drove another adult out of that area, chasing it some distance into the NE area. No defense was made by any bird in this area, nor was even a display indicated. About 2:15 p.m. an S adult was in paired display with 2 birds (at least 1 adult) from the SW area.
