Fulica Americana -121- +12 Gentle Lake, 500 ft., Tilden Park, Contra Costa Co., Calif. - No birds on the lake, at least none seen, from 2 to 3:15 p.m. today. +13 Lake Merritt, Oakland, Alameda Co., Calif. - About 8 coots were seen on Lake Merritt this afternoon. 1 of them was a this year's bird still with the mottled bill and dull legs. Two more seen were apparently paired birds from last summer. One of them, the smaller-, was noted working on the head feathers of the other, larger bird. This larger (?) bird bowed its head down, with its bill under water and its neck arched. With its bill under water it was blowing bubbles. There were no sounds accompanying this display. A moment later the larger bird turned away, followed by the smaller. Sept 14 Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif. - Looked over The Aquatic Park today for coots but saw none. Sept 16 Richmond, Contra Costa Co., Calif. - 2 coots seen this morning on the mud flats just N of the mouth of Clerrito Creek. 1 is an adult and the other looked much like a bird of the year. Neither had tags on them, nor bands as far as I could determine. - Lake Temescal, Oakland, Alameda Co., Calif. - At least 15 birds on this lake today, including 6 adults and at least one gray billed immature. Most of the rest are surely birds of the year, and it was noted that their bills are fully as white as the adults', the band on their bill is not nearly so distinct. Of several seen at close range, the eyes are fully as red as of the adults.
