Wildlife, etc. 1949 Fulica americana -1200- Aug. 12 - Jewel Lake, Tilden Park, Contra Costa Co., Calif. 1335. arrived at south end of Lake & found ?B feeding in the center and one unmarked young bird on the opposite shore. Color on ?B almost negligible. Apparently molting from the brownish tinge of the plumage. Kingfisher flew over and settled. Jack- rabbit seen along the road. Several Black Phoebes feeding over lake from cattails. After watching awhile found B = ?B as it did not look like an adult originally. 1415 left some other coots to be seen and people present. No mallards. Aug 19 - 1600 - No sign of any coots or animal but ranger had recently been to the lake. Green heron flew out of S end and landed in oak up the hillside. 1615 one unmarked young bird with red bill & whitish throat on east side of lake 5 of jutting cat-tails. 1635 there are now 3 unbanded young birds across from where I saw the first one. These are younger than the one I saw last week that was landed. I mallards were in the pocket at the NW corner of the lake. Sept 4 - The two young birds were in the NW corner of the lake in the remaining open spot with app. 7 Mallards.
