Fulica americana -120- y5 Jewel Lake, 50ft, Tilden Park Contra Costa Co. Calif. B with a black headed yng crossing from K25 to F28 about 11:45 a.m. - this smallest of yng now has two large white spots on either side of its breast. but still the black head - gate and all. 12:20 Y and an [illegible] yng (whit headed) are feeding close together at M27. - 12:55 - about 15 minutes ago B's and another wh headed yng very close to the same size were feeding at M26 - a 2nd white headed yng, appearing somewhat larger was at M20 and the little bl-headed yng was at H16. 1:40 - now, the first time in 2 or 3 weeks all the N yng are feeding together at M26. B's proves to be the 2nd largest in the brood - there being one white headed bird larger and one white headed bird smaller - and then of course little blackie - who just escaped being trapped, and apparently crossed the lake from H15 to the E side, then up the E side to the dam and finally back to the NW corner 47 5mi E of Martinez, Contra Costa Co. Calif. 1 adult bird seen feeding on a slough along the highway turned its back on me as I pulled up to stop some distance away. It stayed in that position, keeping its conspicuous bill put of sight, turning its head just enough to watch me but still keeping its bill quite well concealed.
