Eulica americana Apr 9 Lake Jewell, Wilden Park, Contra Costa Co. Calif. The male cost after being chased away from the nest by the kids, moved around to the N of the island where it went into the cat-tails at [illegible] and climbed up on a floating board with a turtle on the other end - neither animal seemed to make a move or be concerned about the other. Apr 11 same locality - at 4 p.m. today - one cost, a small one, was on or very close to the nest. Wouldn't leave until I rustled the cat-tails nearby - then went about four feet, very silently, and concealed itself in the cat-tails not a sound. Stayed there for several minutes, motionless. I left before it returned to the nest. No sign of the other bird. Two birds were feeding at the position (7), in the cat-tails right near the point. The larger bird was outside the cat-tails diving and feeding on cat-tails. The smaller bird remained in the cat-tails, seemed to be feeding or working on something on the surface (perhaps nest platform building?). Once in a while one of the birds (which one?) gave a note, but generally quite. Apr 17 same locality. Nest near island, still with 9 eggs, being incubated. When first visited at about 6:15a.m. no birds near nest, both of them being on opposite side of lake, but the second time I can near the nest, one of the birds was seen floating quietly in
