Fulica americana -102- by 27 Jewel Lake Contra Costa Co. Calif. - 9:35 - G, P/S, SIR are out feeding again - while B w/ her brood is in the cat-tails somewheres near C/12 - 9:36 the imm flew out of the S and some going into the N pond - almost immediately they came flying back with B close on their tails - and by 9:38 all are back in cover, scattered around the S pond and B is apparently in the cat-tails trying to ferret them out. She is at E/11, crossing to D/12 and is giving an occasional "poonk". A young is loudly whewring. Made a drive to see if I might be lucky enough to horse trap a yng - but no luck. - The nest at C/12.6 is not a floating nest and is now clear out of the water - it is no longer in use - it had no gangway and has an inside diameter of 6 in. it is 3 feet from open water to the west. The nest at A/5.15 also is not a floating nest - it may still be in use - it has a gangway facing E into the cat-tails, it has an inside diameter of about 6 inches; it is in about 2 feet of water and about 15 feet from the open water to the west. - The nest at K/28.12 is dilapidated but looks as tho it may still be in use - it has a 6 in inside diameter, is 2 feet from open water to the S, is in about 2 feet of water -
