26 Middle Chain Lake, Golden Gate Pk S.F. Calif - -the south pair were feeding 1 very young bird, and I heard but didn't see a second - bet that 3 pair are still hatching eggs - the one I saw maybe 24 hours old but certainly no older. - why does this lake, about 1/4 the size of jewel Lake, produce 2 broods of coots and 3 or more broods of mallards while Jewel Lake is occupied by only 2 pairs of coots - I'll bet it's to the area of marsh vegetation that is available. 27- Jewel Lake, Centin Costa Co. Calif. - At 8:55 a.m. SB was at E 7 - 1 yng at F 8, 1 yng at G 11 & 1 at H 11 - No sign of any immatures - 9:01 few yng are together with B at G 12 - 2 have white on their heads and white breasts while the other two are still dark headed and dark breasted - one of the birds has a newly pure white color on the front of the head while the other still has a little black mixed in. B in close company with the brood has moved north but S (9:07) is preening while seating out of the water at H 8. 1 immature has shown itself momentarily at H 4. 15 - didn't see the color but it is tagged. 9:10 - now G, G/S, R/B, Y, R/S, S/R, are all feeding in a compact flock at I 4 - a bulldozer working the trail along the west side scared them out of the cat-tail
