Fulica americana -99- by 26 Straw Lake, Golden Gate Park S.F. Calif.- The ♀ in this pair is decidedly pale-gray in addition to being smaller than the ♂- 2 canvas backs resting on a rock near where the yng is resting- watched every move of the approaching ♂- and coaxed their necks when he dived- pulling them down quickly when he emerged - a ♂ sully also seemed to be taking pains to keep these canvas backs between the ♀ foot and himself - The canvas paid no attention to the nearby sully. - The ♂ foot has passed with a foot of the canvas twice, without molesting them - but at the same time had chased about 12 smalls ♂ that were swimming away from more distant positions. The bird coming with food from some distance seems to invariably give or share it with the bird near the yng, and then the 2 of them together fed the yng. - The 2 canvas backs left their rock swimming day near the yng without being attacked by the cost. - Middle Chamis Lake, Golden Gate Pk. S.F. Calif.- at least two pairs with yng on this lake at 5 p.m.- the N pair have 3 yng that are less than a week old - still with colored body plumes -(the yng at Straw Lake had faded body plumes.)
