Now one of the parents is coming across (the ♀) to get a piece of bread from among a lot being thrown to the mallards. After getting a piece of bread she crossed back to the ♂, gave the bread or at least part of it to him, and the two of them proceeded to break it up and to feed it to the yng. What the yng did not eat they did, while passing to & fro I noticed that the ♀ got out of the way of a mute Swan. This pair was shown no evidence of territory behaviour - permitting canvasbacks and mallards to swim within 4 or 5 feet of them and their young. Yet a moment later a mallard coming in close to where one had previously been resting was charged and splattered after by the ♂ - now he is coming across the lake to my side - The mallards and even the blackbirds get out of his way. He attacked one mallard and charged one Brewer-blackbird sitting nearly on the banks.
