Fulica americana -97- by 25 Jewel Lake Contra Costa Co, Calif. At 8:35 A.M. when I arrived, Y, R+B, R/s, G, G+S were all feeding and preening at G-8. B w/3 yng was at J or K 25-26. At 8:53 S came out of cat-tails at H 17 and moved rapidly S-a whewring young following -quickly S moved down -routing the immatures - he got one bird under water - it looked like Y, and apparently held onto the bird with his claws not letting it rise to the surface and occasionally making a vicious jab at it. After about a minute S seemed satisfied and departed - this was at H6.11 - Y has not been seen since. guess I'd better look for a dead bird over there, - I examined the spot but could [illegible] no sign of a dead bird - only a few feathers on the surface. -pulled the pondweed away and felt around the bottom with my feet - -if Y turns up missing in the days to come del to now why. by 26 Stony Lake Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, Calif. a pair w/1 yng about 2 weeks old seen on the small island E of the central island of Stony Lake. 1? of the pair seems to have something wrong with one wing, perhaps the feathers have been plucked - at least it hangs in an abnormal fashion. -He dived for something, brought up what looked like a tad-pole or other small meaty object.
