Fulica americana -96- ly22 Jewel Lake, Contra Costa Co Calif. Caught R 2 of the N brood about 5pm in one of the hooks of the hook wing trap - photographed his its head in detail in BW & color - wt 55.89 gms. TMT 21mm , mid toe 34, hallas., 11 mm bill & shield 20.5mm, pollex claw 2 mm.- - about a dozen faded plumes on the back, wings still with many faded plumes and still a few colored ones on the alula only. colored plumes on head are restricted to area just post and below bald pate - pate still quite bald and red but 2 rows of down feathers are appearing, skin over eyes still blue , mort wax feathers gone only about 2 dozen on each side of base of upper mandible - none behind eye but a few in front of eye -wise feathers below eye forward to under-side of lower mandibule are still unfaded & bright orange -under- surface of body a dense brownish down no evidence of any skated feather on this bird yet - feet and legs a dark gray-green - bill with black tip, white egg tooth still present , followed by red orange - a dash band clear around bill at post edge of hard bill thus partly out to nose - Vow of bill & shield still deep bluish red - the shield becoming distinct and is 6 mm long - it is a very dark grey brown - color is first visibly apparent in it . - rest of many head plumes or wise feathers are faded except the band mentioned above.
