Fulica americana -85- July 21 Jewel Lake, Tilden Park, Contra Costa Co, Calif. same- or perhaps more violent- head shaking among untagged birds on Lake Temescal. 9:46- R/S is still standing on a floating cat-tail- just now has gone back in the water to join S/R feeding at G10.18. As S/R is feeding R/S is just seating on the water nearby, watching.- The base of the bills on G/B, P/B, and on R/S is becoming very light- not ivory yet- but a very light grey, with the distal parts of the bill still darker- Y, G, R/B, G/S & S/R all still have bills that are a mottled color, but of about the same shade from end to end. P/B still has a few flecks of light gray on the head, Y has an unflecked head, G has a head with nearly as much light gray as dark, and R/P/B is only slightly dashed, this a smoother looking bird. R/S & G/B both have dash gray unflecked heads, G/S has as much light as dash on its head- while S/R has a head appearing dash but profusely flecked with lighter feathers. 10:00- S just moved down to H/4 chasing all the immis to G9- then S splattered to F9 chasing 3 immi to G6- after the chase at F9 S "putrked" 3 or 4 times - now 3 boys are working towards him at G12- all 3 apparently "whewring"- now 10:04- S has moved back to G10- "putrking" and gouting the several immatures hiding there.-- now 10:05- 6 immi are at G7, feeding but remaining alert while S is moving Nat H// w/1yng
