Fulica americana -82- July 80 Lake Towsend Alameda Co. Calif. seemed to keep their distance from the one adult coot - and when another coot came out from to S end they all moved - one duck that did not move was charged, then splattered at - the duck flew a few feet - the coot churning when it settled back onto the water - territory seems to be in effect here - one adult after chasing the mallards moved on towards another adult - this bird retreating to its brood near the E side of the lake - after the N bird beat its retreat the other bird turned S. The N bird was greeted by cries of begging as it came in near the place where its 5 young were busily feeding in a mass of Potamogeton. Although the young made the begging screeches, they did not rush over to meet the approaching parent - There are 3 broods on the lake - the 3rd one consisting of birds that are about 3 weeks old - they still have natal down but have lost all plume feathers. their bills are no longer bright red but rather a dull brownish or orange color. 2 of these young were seen, belonging to the B+Q which was responsible for chasing the mallards and the other coot out of the area just
