Lake Temescal, Alameda Co. Calif.
at least 5 were feeding on the open water.
One of the at least 5 adults chased one
of the large immatures- the bird diving
to escape and swimming a long
distance under-water - a ♀ was
“pooking” at the S end in the cover
and a young could be wherping.
Seems to be 2 broods on this lake-
I have seen at least 3 im. belonging
to one brood- and the two parents.
When the two parents came out of a
cove they were met by two
screeching begging young, behaving
much like young gulls. The
parents ignored the young and
went right by them whereupon
the young went into the cove
where the parents had been feeding
and fed themselves- they were
soon driven out by a dog- and
fed upon insects meeting upon
masses of floating algae - at
one instance the ♀ escorted 1 ymg
across some open water- the ♂ did!
seems also to be agitated - is constantly
“putking” and making that partial
growling note. All three of these
young are nearly the same age-
dd with black foreheads, and
some with a narrow dark stripe
down the back of the neck. One
of the adult costs out on the open
lake attacked one of the mallards
