July 19 - Jewel Lake, Tilden Park, Contra Costa Co., Cal. working back and forth in no particular pattern. Both young are feeding themselves. The one is tailing the B. Now (2:10 pm) S has one yng at M26, 5. The yng is resting on a floating log while the parent occasionally feeds it - the yng is preening, stretched up once and flapped its imaginary wings. Now both S + flying are side by side, both busily preening. This young seems to have lost the white plumes from the body and most of the wise plumes from the head - it has some suggestion of white plumes on the head, but very slight. The bill is still bright red. After about 4 min preening S is back in the water feeding - didn't rest at all but preened continuously for the 4 min! It was out of the water. The young just hopped into the water to follow S who is at L24 - B has 2 yng at M20 - both of these seem to be younger than the yng w/S. They have colored plumes on the head yet, and some white plumes on the body. The bird plumes do appear much faded however. Now (2:23 pm) S has 1 yng at M20, 21, B has 1 yng at I 19.6 and 1 yng alone is moving N at L24.19. (2:25) B has just emerged from cat-tails at H18.10 w/ a dyng and is moving S close to cover occasionally turning back to feed the yng. This young has no white body plumes but has pale colored plumes on the head.
