Fulica americana -71- July 19-Jewel Lake, Tilden Park, Contra Costa Co, Calif. turned back a few feet to quiet to a young turning then and proceeding on to M25. /young followed B across and now 2 young are moving W from M27- going into the cat-Tails in that corner. It seems evident that the S pair have left the lake, perhaps along with an immature or two - I wonder if they might be shuttling back and forth because I had not seen G for several days and now Y + R seem to be missing. B/S + G/S have not been seen for several days- nor has the unmarked S adult. - The tender root material of the Potamogeton seems to be a favorite food- I have noticed that birds seem to be especially fond of the piles of weed that I have piled up while wading or root sections pulled up by the boat paddles. - /young seemed to be alone at I 12, working its way N- two imm. were feeding unmolested just out from the cat-tails where the young was - now 12" S is at N26 and Y/B is feeding unmolested at H27. - Y is feeding at H/14.12 and G/S is feeding at H/5.2- now 12:01 p.m. both have turned SE and are working across the lake - B w/2 young is working S at < 25 - one young close into the cat-tails with the parent th other about 10 feet out and a little behind- now (12:03) # B and both yung are out on open water at K24-, more or less
