Pullen 949 Fulica americana Contra Costa -3- Mrs 27 Lake Jewell, Tilden Park, Alameda Co., Calif. brought up what looked like a 1 foot length of cat-tail shoot. It dabbled around with it for a moment and they left it -- later the cost from position (2) noisily moved out at the cat-tails, putted around a moment and quickly the largest of the two at position (3) came across the pond with its head lowered, out about 1/2 way across, turned off and dived towards the spillway. About 11:05 a.m. -- a single bird was displaying its white tail patch- with its tail elevated -- quickly a second bird responded approaching the first and likewise showing its tail patch -- the two birds then rotated back and forth rump to rump -- about 2 feet apart for about 30 second, then one of them dove -- they other (first) also dove a moment late. Both brought up the brown new shoots a cat-tails, the bases of which they proceeded to eat. -- This display was in position (5).
