Its plumage is as much like R2-with faded plumes on its back, orange on its wings & head area-- the skin on its dorsal body is black, but on its wings, and neck the skin is flesh colored-on top of head-the bald pate-it looks severely sunburned- the down on the ventral body surface is so dense as to be nearly impossible to get thru to see skin color-- dorsal down is nowhere nearly so dense. The ventral skin seems to be white. TMT 21mm., mid-toes 28 mm., hallux 11 mm., bill & shield 18 mm. This bird has nearly a complete ring of wax feathers around its eyes. Pollex claw about 1 1/2 mm. note:- Territory seems to be a function of brood and dependent upon either eggs or young being present. The south pair has completely deserted territory defense, since giving up their last nest attempt- but on the other hand the N pair had tolerated other birds in their territory with both broods until they started hatching, first they tolerated mallards until the day they started hatching, and then they tolerated the old brood up until the very day their second brood started coming
