Illon 749 Fulica Americana -65- July 13- Jewel Lake, Tilden Park, Contra Costa Co. Calif. waters. Apparently in times of crisis Territory breaks down, for the N birds will tolerate the birds deeep in their areas as long as I am on the water with the boat. About the time I left (7 p.m.) one young was incubating at E 28 and the N ♀ was working across from the island area along the dam to pick up the lone bird. Another young was on as near the new Negg nest. This nest has been much built up and apparently is much in use as a brood nest. July 14- same locality (8:15 a.m.) Apparently, the tags have been lost off one immature eince I can see 4 unmarked young immatures in addition to 1 marked adult this morning. That other wood nest, found July 8, is at A/5.5. It is a very well built affair and may have been destined for eggs. At 3 p.m. caught R3 of the new N brood. Reclipped its mail- [illegible] caught it at K 26 after it had dove to escape - it went under twice, The second time I was able to follow it as it swam immediately under the pondweed. Both times when it came up for air and when I caught it - it "peeped" urgorously. After I got it to the ear it pecked but not while on the water - it was so tangled
