Eulica americana -51- July 3 Jewel Lake Tilden Park Contra Costa Co Calif. away to escape capture - when they are in danger then one of them swam under some floating cat-tail which kept it partially submerged while the other remained motionless under some root structure of some cat tail in order to remain concealed. Both of them were absolutely silent until captured - then they loudly "whew'd" - The new egg nest of the S pair, at I 5.14 has been considerably built up- 3 of the Dd eggs were under water on part of the gangway, the others could not be found. - Also found another brood nest of the S pair, at C 6.16 - seems to be very much in use. - At about 3 p.m I found the 3rd egg nest of the south pair with 4 eggs in it at F 9.24. All eggs marked on side & big end but not other movements taken. Eggs were all quite warm, the male was over in D11, "pumping", the F could not be seen or heard. - Seen to be 6 in the north brood feeding together. Still a couple of very light birds in the S brood but most of them seems to have the immature plumage now. At the moment both S parents & one young are crossing from point D12 towards the nest area. - At 3:35 p.m. #3? of the new N brood was hatched but still slightly damp - it was busily mewling and both parents as nearly cooing & purring - it was mild
