July 1 - Jewel Lake, Tilden Park, Contra Costa Co., Calif. Watched 5 young of the N Wood early this morning - all of them still have light gray heads and rather darkish bills - 2 feeding on the raft have bills that are getting light - one of them has been busy trying its wings out - flapping them and dancing around. One of the N Wood parents has been busy chasing young this morning - splattering after them and them chasing when the young dived to escape. About 10 a.m. today I found the second nest of the N pair - at N 25. 3/4 . One egg at least has already hatched and left the nest while a second young, just hatched is in the nest; this second one was photographed in B&W color - 4 more eggs, one of which (#3) was just one piped. The male was in the vicinity pukeing. I will get other measurements on this nest at a later date - gotta get the wing trap made. About 2 p.m. the recently hatched young was out of the nest and I heard the "whew" of two young at N 25. (This nest was located by hearing the loud "whew" notes of the just hatched young this morning). The old egg nest of the N pair is still being built up and kept under good repair - in addition the platform at N 26.14 seems to have been considerably developed and looks as though it may be in use as a brood nest.
