{ "text": "2. Special steel insect pins. These usually come\nin packages of one-hundred or five-hundred, and are\nof uniform length. The variable thickness is de-\nsignated by 2 number which increases with the\ndiameter of the pin. Number three is probably the\nmost generally useful size, but ones and fives are also\nvaluable. Insects too small for size one pins must be\ndealt with by special methods, as very fine pins\nbend too readily to be practical.\n3. A pair of scissors, for cutting strips of paper.\n4. A pair of broad-ended, rough-faced forceps,\nfor grasping insect pins.\n5. A pair of slender, pointed forceps, straight or\ncurved, with which to hold the specimens.\n6. Spreading needles. Make these yourself,\nusing number eleven or twelve sewing needles with\nmatch sticks for handles. The eye end of the needle\nshould be thrust into the end of the match stick for\nabout half the needle's length, by means of a pair of\npliers. You may have to try several times before\nfinding a match straight enough in the grain to endure\nthis without splitting, but the resultant tool is better\nfor its purpose than any you might buy. If you plan to\nmount one specimen at a time, you will need four of\nthese needles, but when spreading a large number of\ninsects at once, you may have to use four for each\nspecimen on half of the board, or about a dozen, and\nin case of a series of stiff specimens, which require\nneedles to remain in place until the insects have\ndried, four for each specimen in the lot.\n7. A lancet, or broad bladed dissecting needle,\nfor cutting the wing muscles of Skippers. Skippers\nare butterflies belonging to the family Hesperiidae\nwhich may be recognized by the hooks at the ends of\nthe antennae. Their wings are small, but so strongly\nmuscled that they often cannot be spread without\ntearing unless the muscles are cut, as shown in fig. 8,\nby a small but deep longitudinal incision just under\neach wing. This operation is performed after the\nspecimen has been pinned in the usual manner, as\ndescribed below.\nIn addition to these tools, you will require some\nstrong, tough paper, typewriter bond will do, and\nsome stiff heavy paper or light index card. The\npapers must be large enough to make strips about\nseven inches long.\nDissecting needle, forceps, and insect pins are\nobtainable from dealers in scientific supplies.\nEntomological specimens must be mounted while\ndamp and pliable. If this cannot be done when the\ninsects are fresh-killed, they must be softened by\nexposure to the saturated atmosphere of a relaxing\nbox. The construction and use of relaxing boxes is\ndiscussed in Leaflet Four, and one of them is shown in\nfig. 9. On top,\na layer of dry cotton to protect specimens from\ncontact with liquid.\ndition, and even when mounting fresh specimens it is\nadvisable to keep them in a relaxing box until you are\nready for them.\nFor convenience in describing the spreading pro-\ncess, it will be assumed that the operator is right\nhanded, and that the specimens are moths and butter-\nflies of average size, to be mounted, in the usual\nscientific style, upon pins.\nSelect boards with grooves of widths suitable to\nthe specimens to be mounted.
