TO BOTANISTS. The following list of species represents my work in California during the time included between June 20th and August 4th. Nearly the whole collection was made at Santa Cruz, on the coast, and at Soda Springs, three miles below Summit, in the Sierras, on the Central Pacific Railroad. Some very interesting plants were collected on the road in Nevada, especially at Wells. The whole collection contains over 900 species. I am greatly indebted to the Superintendent, General Passenger Agent, and Mr. B. B. Redding, of the Central Pacific Railroad, for facilities given me over their road, which made so large a collection possible in so short a time. The interest taken by these men in everything pertaining to the welfare of their State is well known, and would require no mention here were it not for their personal interest in my work. At least a dozen new species were discovered, and quite a number of others were added to the already well known flora of the State. I have been able to use both volumes of the "Flora of California" this year, and so have made some changes in synonyms, and also have corrected some common errors. The sets contain 507 species. Plants starred are not in the sets. It is my intention to spend the entire coming season in completing the exploration of the coast, and hope to add a much larger number of species to the collection.
