R.S. Grosain 1965 Journal SIC 10 25 Nov. cont. Baker Island Ext. south and east shores, storm-petrels were very abundant - mostly Luddy turnstones, few golden plovers, numerous wandering tattlers, few Gulls, one Brant thighed curlew. All Luddy turnstones that could be glassed were checked for bands - none seen. two specimens (unbanded) were selected. No res-rumped Aleutian birds were seen, although it is doubtful if the paint would still show. One pair of Blue-faced boobies had a full grown fledgling on the west side of the island near the lighthouse. Approximately 300 Common Noddies were seen on the inner coral bar in the center of the small lagoon, on the east end of the island. These were just starting to settle down to nesting with 49 eggs found, mostly fresh from its clean appearance. One Brown Booby, ca 10 Sooty Terns, ca 10 Hawaiian Noddies were seen over the island. Mice were abundant, no cats seen. Landed at 11:30 - high surf, but caught it right and surfed in at the head of one swell at a very rapid speed (ca. 20 mph). Left then went back to ship. Had no trouble getting out. We finished the survey.
