RJ (c2) Makaluva Island (3) 775'. It is situated 850' south of the big island. The island has no beach and offers only steep slopes for terrains. We completed two partially used strings of bands, banding 87 nestling Wedge tail Shearwaters. Plants were not sampled due to shortage of time for analysis but common species were noted. Among these was Scaevola, Coconut Palm, Casuarina equisetifolia, Sesuvium portulacastrum and wild Tomato. One Keuper albatross was seen in the vicinity of the big island during our stay there. A group of 3 Riem birds (?) was seen on the big island. One wandering Tattler was seen on the small island. About 10 Rock Doves were seen on both islands. One dead Rock Dove was seen on the big island. A total of 12 dead Wedge tails were overseen and 16 spoiled eggs were seen on the big island and approx 20 spoiled eggs on the small island. Makaluva Sr & Popia Jr appear to have the highest egg mortality of all the islands surveyed - a total of 404 Wedge tails were seen. One individual had a healed broken wing and was not banded.
