R.J. Makalu Islands (3) Nov. 1, 1963 We left for Makalu Is. at 11:30 a.m., courtesy of Mr. E. Nelson Jr., deputy Game Warden, Hawaiian Fish & Game Comm. Field party consisted of R. Trent, W. King, Dr. C. Clay, R. Cleppa, D. Gatley, J. Dawson, and J. Obbott. The island is a double one, the larger one lies 3800' off Oahu. It is 975' long by 750' wide. It consists of two peaks with a saddle back ridge running between them. On the Oahu side a long slope runs down to a sand beach. The seaward side consists of sheer cliffs. The higher peak rises to a height of 225 ft. Our party landed on the same beach which faces Oahu. The beach is separated from the remainder of the island by a fence which is posted with "Do Trespassing" signs, placed there by Hawaiian Fish & Game. This beach is open to the public and although we found approximately 35 Wedgetails in this area, the population is undoubtedly limited or reduced due to rubbish strewn about by visitors. We proceeded above the fence and continued banding. A total of 313 nesting Wedgetails were banded on the big island. Left big island at 1:00 p.m. and proceeded to small island.
