Mokapu Point Motu Mane was observed from coastal ridge at point. Much Booby activity was observed. We hope to return to this area at night for banding purposes. Left area at 1350 hours. Nov. 27, 1963 Arrived Mokapu point at 1900 hours for purpose of banding Redfooted Booby Colony. Field party consisted of R. Fleet, J. Sibley, R. Clapp, W. King, D. Bradley, L. Huber, and R. Walter (Hawaii Fish & Game). An estimate of population after made by Sibley at around 1500 birds or more; I feel that 1000 to 1500 birds is more in line with the actual count. We banded 19 individuals, of which 61 were immature or rather subadult. Banding was made extremely difficult due to heavy scus the growth in which the birds were rooting as well as the up and down nature of the ground surface. Two band recoveries were made. [697 69623 - 44725037]. The first is thought to be one of Dr. Bohmelt's left colony at 2102 hrs. Very tiring.
