Fleet Oct. 23, 1963 R.F. (D) Makua Island (10) (Chinaman hat) Oct. 23, 1963 Made first visit on Oct. 27, 1963. Hulled to island from [qualoa point], a distance of 0.3 mile. Field party consisted of R. Fleet, K. Amerman, and W. King. Island is approx 0.10 by 0.13 miles in area, and is dominated by a monolith or mesa-like or butte-like rock that rises to elevation of 205 feet. This occupies the center of the island and gives island characteristic appearance from which it derives its name. This peak is lava rock, i possibly the core of an old volcano. Principal veg. consists of 6 coconut palms, scowels, prickly pear, etc. These will be sampled later. Fifteen immature Webpsteil cobwebbing area found in lummus (on one surface). All but one were found in an area about 50 feet in length
