Found a Bulwer's Petrel and a Gecko under pile of dry all batteries at top of Tanager Peak. Climbed Tanager Peak, along ridge to Miller Peak, down gulch to beach, back to camp. September 24--Climbed to Miller Peak. Finished population counts and worked with Miller birds. Left for ship at 1630. Extremely rough seas. Saw one large seal and one medium turtle at landing area. Ship reports large sharks up to 12 feet long. Population survey estimates: Miller bird = estimated 40 on Miller peak. Total population 100 - 150. Sooty Tern = heard one Fairy Tern = 175 (300-400) Golden Plover = 5 Blue-gray Noddy = 150 Ruddy Turnstone = 30 Red-tailed Tropicbird = local 4 estimate 50 to 75 total immature 5 adult 3 Gray-backed Tern = 1 adult; 6+ in immature plumage Red-footed Booby = local 15 immature 68 adult 449 estimate 800 - 1000 Frigatebird = local 167 immature = 1002 estimates with 50 percent nest mortality equals 5000-6000 Blue-faced Booby = immature 14 adult 26 estimate 50 Brown Booby = immature 4 adult 2 estimate 20 Finch = 4000 - 5000 mostly guesses. Wedge-tailed Shearwater = downy chicks, maximum of 2000 Common Noddy = few eggs few nestlings, mostly locals. 3500-4000 young. Hawaiian Noddy = 200 - 300 Bulwer's Petrel - counted 25+ dead birds. Covered ship at night. Night population of 1000 - 2000.
