September 9
Arrived Eastern Island 2015 hours. Began banding Sooty Terns.
Batteries failed; total 1700 banded. Ate breakfast and banded
Red-tailed Tropicbirds.
Eggs 3 Nestlings 2 Locals and Immatures 8
Saw several strange shorebirds. Had white on side of face, brown
on rest of body, about size of Golden Plovers.
Saw approximately 50 RT, 15 GP, 3 WT on Eastern. Returned to
Sand Island at 0900.

September 10--Flew to Kure in afternoon. Noticed three flocks of
shorebirds along runway at Sand totaling about 300 to 400 individuals.
Saw three larger Rays and four larger sharks in lagoon at Midway and
one larger ray in lagoon at Kure. Crew looked fine also ST guys. Bill
'said he was getting excellent coop. Pup was taken to Midway.
September 11--Took boat to Eastern at 2015. Banded Sooty Terns until
dawn. Very difficult since chicks are flying, some leaving, areas have
been banded thoroughly. Banded 2600 ST. Found two orange-tagged Sooty
Terns with faded tags. 753-18602 faded orange
753-10017 nearly white
Three pair of Blue-faced Boobies in Sooty colony at west end of
island; all had large chicks (immatures). Three band recaptures.
