1964--notes by species--Kure
Laysan Albatross
Dance: Bobbing head and bouncing on toes birds face each other. Chew at one another's beak or clack beaks rapidly side by side. May at this time also rapidly shake head from side to side and emit a shriek: AEEEEE... One or both birds then stand on toes with head thrown back and emit a low moan. If only one bird does this other bird may just stand still at this point and watch. At this point birds tuck head beneath wing (eitherone) and preen feathers--time of this operation becomesshorter as dance increases in tempo. Removin[illegible] head from this position bird again goes into tiptoes head back position emitting a single hollow sounding CLACK from bill. Dance usually repeats from here. May or may not be followed by copulation.
Aggressive: After fighting the dominant individual tiptoes with head back and moans only slightly differently from dance call. Notes are slightly higher.
Egg-chick: Birds will defend nest by snapping beak and a sort of growling note. When egg and chick is removed and then returned or prior to sitting down the parent bird may emit a series of short bark-like cries. AE-AE-AE, etc., usually with beak partially open. This call is the same call used by chick to call parents.
Feeding: Chick stimulates adult to disgorge by nibbling on side of adult's beak. Chick places its beak at right angles inside adult's beak and catches disgorged Food. Main staple food of these birds is squid and squid eggs. Eggs are pink in color and look like caviar. Sometimes adults have trouble in disgorging food for their chicks and may approach a nearby chick, peck and harass
