Fleet, Robert 1964 JOURNAL September 8 Arrived Midway at 1430 hours. Flight passed over Kauai: rugged coast line and large canyons. Also passed over Pearl and Hermes Reef. Checked into BOQ, unpacked, checked in at Post Office, got Eastern Island pass from Security office. Bought a belt $1.80. Lt. cdr. Kabschull found a bicycle for me to use during my stay here. Got boat schedule for transportation between Easter and Sand. Visited CG ship Basswood now in port here and had a short talk with officers. Left for Eastern Island at 1725. Sooty Terns much in evidence, Banded Tropicbirds and chic (12). Divided population into eggs, chicks under 30 days and immatures (nestlings) over 30 days old. Eggs 2 Nestlings 5 Local and Immatures 18 One band recovery, probably ours, NTF3 615-06522. On beach near boat landing saw shorebird: large (about size of BTC), bill similar to that of WT and dark; bird brown above, grey below with black ribbing on breast and abdomen. Greenish-yellow legs, head dark grey; anterior breast and neck shows darker grey ring. Could this be a yellow-legs? Began banding Sooty Tern immatures at 2000 hours (not completely dark), new moon set by 2200, quit banding at 2300, caught boat for Sand at 2330 after banding 700 birds. 793-25001 - 25500 Immature 793-25501 - 600 " 793-25801 - 900 "
