1964--notes by species--Kure
(Red-tailed Tropicbird)
April 29--Observed this sp. bird on nest scratching head with right foot over wing.
Rats killing all chicks. Skin them out and eat some (?) or all (?).
Approximately 350-400 eggs on island.
3-23--Seems as though pair that don't as yet have egg tend to sit together near
prospective nest site in morning. Later in day one? or both? display in air.
3-24--Pair seem to sit together just before egg is laid. This would indicate that
d takes over almost imm. after egg is laid. Today 2 ?s gave repeated chirping
call.
3-27--Changeover bird returns, sits facing bird on egg. Repeated Al-Al calls
exchanged (see #103)
5-27--Bird near N tower constructing nest. Bird sporadically pushed sand from
nest area with feet. One foot at a time and frequent pauses. Definite bowl
about 4 inches in depth.
