Fleet, R. 8 1964--notes by species--Kure (Red-tailed Tropicbird) water by Frigate; another pursued by 6 Frigates. Alarm posture: head depressed on neck; wings back along body, shoulders flared forward and out. Black scapular feathers showing. March 9--Most of island has been searched for nesting birds. Total of 6 nests found; seem to indicate early breeders; no birds with eggs found. Flight patterns over island seem to indicate location of roosting birds (beneath them). In display tail is switched from one side to other every few seconds: direction not correlated with flight direction. Two of birds banded have thrown up--one squid and one flying fish. March 10--Very windy today and saw only 2-4 birds in the air. High winds definitely affect this species, but not others. Saw one individual (#5): black on nares ran to tip of beak and black extended behind eye about 1 inch. March 11--Found four more eggs today. Cone of birds in air mark best location. March 14--Palped two eggs in ? birds today. it is possible that ?s have a lighter colored beak--at least during breeding March 19-- Display call is a short, repeated croak--ach-ach. Alarm is same sound but longer drawn out scream and somewhat higher pitched. These birds occasionally vomit fish when handled--primarily flying fish and squid. March 21--Nesting birds sit in rain with head held more or less vertical allowing rain to run off. April 11--Cloaca of ? after dropping egg is enlarged, swollen and of a purple color. Fecal material runs free due to strained sphincter. April 14--now have 2 chicks. Nest #3 and 103. Approx. 2 days old. Incubation estimated to be around 30 days.
