Fleet, E. 1964--notes by species--Kure 7 Red--tailed Tropicbird January 29--Have seen eight flying over island, in groups of two or more, calling Periodically fly out to sea (over lagoon). Apparently roosting in scaevola (all adults). Feb. 7--Saw 16 of these birds flying about island today. Two distinct groups, one over N part of island, one over S. Feb. 12--Increased to at least 30 individuals by Feb. 10. Usually fly about island in groups of pairs. Squack andfly backwards (flapping wings heavily and assuming a head-up verical position. Periodically swoop low and hover over clumps of Scaevola. Have been observed diving into scaevola. (Hover about 3 feet above sc-evo1s, fold wings and dive in.) Two birds have been captured on ground. Plumage has pink cast, bill cherry-red. Feb.--Increased to 60 individuals in air. No nesting. Feb. 28--Saw bird at SP with blue X on breast. March 2--Counted 150 birds in air over island today. Banded two (2), both had pink wash to feathers. No nesting observed ss yet. (One bird with chick on Midway and several on eggs?) March 5--Banded two birds with eggs on NEpoint, in scaevola. Eggs are speckled reddish in color and between.Bonin and B.F. Booby eggs in size. Very little mest preparation: circular area, slight depression, some few sticks and leaves. March 6--Banded two birds with eggs near B. F. nest #6. Band No. 12661 and 12662. Counted 500 in air over island Daily cycles should be extracted from activity study data. No. 12654 on egg at Biltmore Rd. March 7--Rained all day. No PTTB in air. Believe birds leave for sea about 1600 (1500) every day. March 8--Banded 14 (and 2 by Wirtz) birds today. Saw one individual knocked into
