Fleet, R. 1964--notes by species-Kure March 30--Now have 12 Blue-faced Booby chicks. Chicks have a female type crook! Gular flutter observed in adults. April 5--Last night saw two unbanded birds standing on NE beach. Since these birds most often (except this island) nest on beach, can assume these come from some other island and are not part of resident pop. April 7--Observed one individual pursued momentarily by Frigate. Booby squacked; Frigate gave up chase. April 13--Observed ? laying egg. Was standing over nest scrape and was not frightened off by my approach. Moments later an egg appeared [illegible] cloaca and fell to ground. ? turned around rolled egg several times with beak and then stood over egg. April 14--Bill Wirtz observed oldest chick of nest #19 attack and drive younger chick from nest. The chicks are only 3 days apart but oldest weighs 3 times as much as younger--12 and 9 days. June 1--Young birds now have primaries and tail--feed on whale fish--anger call-- defensive posture with head on ground. Some appear to have wounds on neck as if attacked by adults. Anger calls a new like snarl--same call when older chick drives younger chick from nest and when handled by us.
