Blue-faced Booby
January 30--Two pair in NAF with eggs under incubation on nest scrapes. One pair
behind oil tanks copulating this morning.
Males have a high pitched wheeze call and ?? have a lower pitched honk.
Immaturess also have honk. Difference in bill color--male brighter yellow
(comperative characteristic).
February 7--One Blue-faced Booby ♀ in the Laysan study area observed sitting on
abandoned Laysan egg. When frightened off of nest bird returned and sat on egg
after nudging it with his beak.
These birds lay 2 eggs, generally sit for 12? hour periods.
February 10--Five Blue-faced Booby nests in NAF. One has a single egg, others

February 11--Six nests in NAF, two with single egg. One nest in SA--2 with
single egg. Don't build nest, just bore areas of sand, no veg.
February 21--First chick appeared. No down, eyes closed. Altricial.
February 28--Second chick hatched in nest with first chick. Size ration about 4 to 1.
February 29-- Second chick gone--eaten?
March 19--New chick hatched in nest number 6. Observed ? at a scrape picking up
and dropping twigs--in preparation to laying of egg. Difficult to move from
scrape. (did lay).
