Amerson, B. 1963 C.G. LORAN Station, Sand I., Johnston Is. Atoll Wilz was shown the procedure and caught on fast. The birds in the grassy area were easy to catch while those in open areas were not. This was especially true after the full moon moved into view. Many of the adults were feeding the immature birds-even those that could fly. Almost all birds had fish and squid, as indicated by their "upclucking". Many Wedge tailed Shearwaters were seen in the grass area also. We finished shortly after 11 pm and then checked our map traps (50 percent capture of Mus mus.) The mice were placed in a plastic bag for ectoparasites and the traps reset (most had no bait though). We returned to our quarters and cleaned up before going to bed. Since our pants were very dirty we placed them outside to keep them from smelling up the room. About 12 midnight a heavy rain fell accompanied by gusty wind. July 9, 1963 After breakfast field notes from yesterday were written up. After this nesting Frigatebirds were banded. Eleven adults (5 on eggs and 8 on chicks) and 6 nestlings were banded. It was decided to try to get wooden nest maskers made (from old crates) for the Brown and Red footed Boobies and the Frigatebirds. Upon checking the immatures shear- water found yesterday we discovered that it was a Christmas Island Shearwater when one of its' parents was with it.
